Host a Student

Share American culture with a foreign student

What is hosting?

Homestay host families welcome a foreign student (middle or high school age) into their home short-term. While the students live as a part of an American family, both students and families receive the benefit of an enriching cultural experience and the making of lifelong friends.

It’s our belief that the international homestay experience will work to improve our understanding of the foreign student’s values and attitudes and expose the student not only to American English but to American culture through NISE programming and the host family’s lifestyle.

Promote goodwill

Our philosophy is to promote international goodwill and understanding. Homestay programs support US diplomacy efforts.

Break stereotypes

Our goal is to move our young guests beyond the illusions of television and the Hollywood film industry to see the authenticity of everyday American life!

Share diversity

NISE’s Host families have a wide range of backgrounds, interests and experiences, providing students with a real flavor for the diversity that America is proud of.

Common questions

As a host family, you’ll show a student from another culture that Americans are interested in building international relationships and passionate about their local communities. You’ll get an up-close and personal perspective on another culture. Hosting gives your children an understanding of other cultures and the ability to communicate cross-culturally.

Host families provide room and board as well as transportation to and from program activities. You’ll also help guide and support the student throughout their time in the US.

Host families pay for room and board (housing and food). Student will bring their own spending money for souvenirs and entertainment.

Though hosting is on a volunteer basis, NISE offers a discount for children of host families on our outbound programs.

Busy families make great host families as this is the best way for students to learn about life in the US.
